Bathroom Renovation in Deià and Valldemossa
Deià and Valldemossa are village stone in a protected landscape, where what is visible from outside a house is the first question asked and the bathroom is the one room that may be entirely new inside. New inside, unchanged outside
A house in these villages is a stone house whose outside answers to the landscape and whose inside is the owner’s, and the bathroom is where that division is most useful: a room that can be rebuilt from the floor up – the drain found, the floor separated from the ground, the wet area waterproofed, plaster and stone and a walk-in shower with a linear drain – without touching a wall the village can see. Enlarging a window or adding a vent through the facade is a different conversation, and the company will say when a design needs one.
The bathrooms start as late additions in thick-walled rooms with small windows and floors on the ground, damp at the base of the walls, with pipes that were got through the stone wherever they could be. Keeping the fixtures where the pipe is, and spending on the wet area and the finish, is the renovation that usually makes sense.
The houses are second homes and holiday lets as often as year-round homes, so the work is planned for the empty months and finished before the first guests.

Can I add a window or a vent to a bathroom here?
Anything that changes the outside of the house is a question for the company and, where there is one, the architect, before it is a design decision – not something to assume either way. Inside the existing envelope the bathroom is yours to rebuild.
How do you ventilate a bathroom with one small window?
With ventilation designed rather than hoped for: a fan sized for the room, routed where the building allows, and a wall finish that lets the stone dry. The companies that work in these villages have done it before.
