Modern Bathrooms in Mallorca

The modern bathroom is the one most villas built or refurbished here in the last while are given: large surfaces with few joints, a shower with no tray and no frame, a vanity that floats off the floor, everything mechanical hidden in the wall, and light that is designed rather than switched on. It photographs well, and it is a demanding style to build, because there is nowhere for a bad line to hide. Describe the room and we pass the request to bathroom renovation companies near you.

A bathroom lined in large format porcelain tiles has a floating white vanity, black fixtures, and a walk-in shower.

What defines it

Fewer lines. Large-format porcelain or microcement on the walls and the floor, so the grid of grout disappears; a wet room or a walk-in shower on the same floor as the room, with a linear drain against the wall and a single sheet of glass; a wall-hung vanity in lacquer or a flat-fronted wood, with an integrated basin or one set under a solid top; the toilet wall-hung on a concealed frame; the shower valve, the outlets and the niche flush with the wall. The palette is narrow – one stone or one colour, one metal – and the light comes from where it is needed: the mirror, the shower, a strip under the vanity.

What it is not: cold. The modern bathroom on the island borrows the Mediterranean one’s warmth – a stone-look porcelain in a warm grey, a wood vanity, brass rather than chrome – and is the better for it.

The elements, surface by surface

  • Floors: large-format porcelain or microcement, continued into the shower with the fall formed underneath
  • Walls: the same material, floor to ceiling, in as few pieces as the tiler and the stair allow
  • Shower: a wet room or a walk-in with a linear drain, frameless glass, a concealed valve and a rainfall head
  • Vanity: wall-hung, flat-fronted, with an integrated or undermounted basin and drawers rather than doors
  • Sanitaryware: wall-hung toilet and bidet on concealed frames, rimless where the range allows
  • Fixtures: wall-mounted taps, concealed pipework, one finish throughout
  • Colours: one neutral and one accent, or one material and its own variation
  • Lighting: layered – a mirror lit from the sides, a strip in the shower, a low light under the vanity for the night
  • Practical: flat walls for large slabs, frames in the wall for everything that hangs, decisions made before the wall is closed

Why it is harder to build than it looks

A modern bathroom is a bathroom with no trim, no skirting and no frame to cover a gap – so there can be no gap. The large slab shows every lip in the wall behind it. The linear drain has to sit exactly where the fall arrives. The glass is measured to the millimetre after the stone is on. The concealed cistern, the shower valve and the mirror light all need their frames and their cables in the wall at first fix, and a decision changed after the wall is closed costs the wall.

That is why the companies that build this style well want a drawing before they price, and why a modern bathroom quoted quickly is usually a modern bathroom with a trim in it somewhere.

Modern or minimalist – what is the difference?

A modern bathroom has clean lines and hidden mechanics; a minimalist one goes further and takes almost everything else out too – one material, no visible storage, no objects. Most people who ask for a modern bathroom want the first; the second is a page of its own.

Is large-format porcelain suitable for an old house?

On walls that can be made flat, yes, and the contrast between a modern bathroom and an old building is one of the things architects here do well. The wall preparation is the work; the slabs are the easy part.

Does a modern bathroom date quickly?

The style itself no – clean lines and hidden mechanics have been the direction for a long time. What dates is the accent: the feature wall, the coloured basin, the fashionable tap finish. Keep those to things that can be changed and the room lasts.
