Glass, light and salt
A bathroom with a window onto the harbour is designed from the window: the shower where the view is, frameless glass so nothing interrupts it, a bath placed for the light if there is room for one, and surfaces that the low sun does something to – honed stone, warm microcement, nothing polished enough to glare. It is the spa bathroom’s natural home, and the villas here are the size for it.
The salt is the price of the view. Everything metal is specified for the coast – brushed or coated finishes, solid fittings, hardware meant for the sea – and the ventilation is sized for a room that is damp from the outside as well as from the shower. A company that works along this coast will say all of this at the survey.
The villas are stepped down the hillside, so the floor depth and the waste route are the technical questions, as they are on every slope here, and they are answered before the design is drawn.
What a bathroom here has to work around
- A window onto the harbour that the design starts from
- Salt air on every finish, all year
- A villa stepped down a hillside, and the waste route it implies
- Light that makes polished surfaces glare
- Frameless glass, and a wall that has to carry it
- A second home, empty for the work and full in summer

Can the shower go in front of the window?
With frameless glass and a floor that drains to a line, yes, and it is one of the pleasures of a bathroom here. The window itself may want to be a fixed pane or a specification for a wet room; the company will say.
What finishes last by the sea?
Brushed and coated metals over polished chrome, solid fittings over plated ones, and hardware made for the coast. The companies that work here will name what they have seen last; ask for it on the quote.
