Mediterranean Bathrooms in Mallorca

The Mediterranean bathroom is the one the island already knows how to make: warm walls in plaster or microcement, a floor in stone or a stone-look tile, an arch where a square opening would do, wood where it can stay dry, and light that comes in low and moves across the room through the day. It belongs in a finca, a village house and a modern villa alike, and it is the style most people who buy here want without quite naming it. Describe the room and we pass the request to bathroom renovation companies near you.

A domed plastered ceiling with a round skylight tops an arched niche shower, beside a toilet and a stone basin.

What defines it

Warmth in the surfaces rather than in the colour: a plaster or microcement wall in sand, cream, clay or off-white, textured by the hand that applied it; a floor in limestone, a warm-toned porcelain or terracotta; wood in the vanity or the shelf, oiled and left to age. Curves, where the building allows them – an arched niche, a rounded shower opening, a basin cut from a block. Metal in brushed brass, bronze or aged black rather than chrome. And light: a window or a skylight where there can be one, and warm light where there cannot.

What it is not: a themed room. No painted tiles for the sake of it, no fisherman’s lamps, nothing that says Mediterranean instead of being it. The style is a palette and a set of materials, and it works best when it is quiet.

The elements, surface by surface

  • Floors: limestone, travertine, a warm porcelain, or terracotta where the house has it elsewhere
  • Walls: lime plaster or microcement in a warm neutral; tiles only where the water is, or zellige-style glazed tiles used sparingly
  • Shower: a built floor in the same stone or microcement, an arched or rounded opening, a fixed panel or none at all
  • Vanity: wood or a plastered plinth with a stone top; a basin set on top or carved from stone
  • Sanitaryware: simple, white, wall-hung where the wall allows
  • Fixtures: brushed brass, bronze, aged black; wall-mounted where the pipework can be concealed
  • Colours: sand, cream, clay, white, olive, and the blue of the sea used once
  • Lighting: daylight first, then warm lamps at the mirror and one in the shower
  • Practical: plaster and microcement are sealed; stone is sealed; wood is kept where it dries

Which houses it belongs in

In a finca or a village house it is the bathroom the building would have had if it had been built with one: the same plaster, the same stone, an opening in the thick wall for a niche. In a modern villa it is the style that keeps a glass-and-concrete house from feeling like a hotel – warm surfaces, a stone floor, light handled with care. In an apartment it is a way of making a small room feel like it belongs to the island rather than to a catalogue.

It suits a second home particularly well, because it is a style that ages: a scuff on a plastered wall, a stone that darkens where the water runs, and the room looks more itself rather than less.

The materials behind the style

Microcement

The plastered look with a sealed, waterproof-able surface. The Mediterranean wall, on a wet-room floor.

Natural stone

Limestone and travertine underfoot and on the vanity top. The floor the style stands on.

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Bathrooms is a comparison service. A request for a Mediterranean-style bathroom goes to the bathroom renovation companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  1. 01

    Describe the job

Tell us the property, roughly what you want and where it is. Photographs and a rough plan help, though neither is required.

  2. 02

    We match it

The request goes to companies that work in your area and take on this kind of job at this size.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

  4. 04

    You compare and choose

Put the quotes side by side and take the one you want, or none of them. Using the site costs you nothing.

Is a plastered bathroom practical?

Plaster in a bathroom is either lime plaster used away from the water, or microcement, which is sealed and goes in the shower. Both are practical when they are done by somebody who does them, and both want the waterproofing under them like any other finish.

Does it have to be beige?

No. The palette is warm rather than pale: clay, sand, olive, a deep green, an earth red, the blue used once. A Mediterranean bathroom in a single dark microcement with brass is as much the style as a cream one.

Can it be done in a modern villa?

It is often the best thing to do in one. The materials are the same; the lines are straighter, the arch becomes a curve in a niche or a basin, and the light is designed rather than found.
